6 Tips for a Strong cv and a convincing job interview

Applying for jobs remains a challenge for many candidates. You put time into your cv, prepare for your interview, and yet it often remains unclear why you were or weren’t selected.

What really makes the difference? And where do candidates unknowingly miss out on opportunities?

To get clear answers we sat down with Cindy, Talent aquisition Specialist at iCredit. Every week Cindy is in contact with an average of 15 candidates, therefore she knows better than anyone what recruiters pay attention to.

Because of that experience, she quickly sees who stands out, and why.

To get you started, Cindy shares the most important insights and tools you can apply right away.

1. Make sure your CV is stable and transparent

A good cv isn’t just about what is on it, but also about what isn’t.
Big gaps caused by travel experiences or many job changes aren’t necessarily a problem, if you explain them.

“A big gap or a lot of different positions automatically raises questions. Explain and address it. That way you avoid gaps that are open to interpretation.”

Stability and clarity build trust. Recruiters look for certainty.

2. Think like a recruiter, not like a candidate

A strong candidate constantly asks themselves one question: what does the recruiter want to know? Put yourself in their shoes and structure your cv logically:

  • Personal details (including LinkedIn, driver’s license, availability)
  • A short, targeted summary of your profile
  • Work experience with concrete, useful information: company, role, tasks, results, and tools used
  • Education and certificates

Keep this information concrete and concise. Go back a maximum of 10 years and limit your cv to 2 pages.

3. Make your profile personal and relevant

The summary at the top of your cv isn’t a minor detail; it’s your pitch.

“The summary on your cv says a lot about the person. Write it yourself and mean what’s written there.”

Adapt this summary for each company you apply to and highlight your strengths, what gives you energy, and your language skills.

If you have little experience, mention relevant internships as well, by linking that experience to the job you’ll always be a step ahead.

4. Good preparation makes the difference

Recruiters immediately notice when someone isn’t prepared.

“You quickly notice the difference between someone who has prepared and already knows a thing or two about the company, and someone who’s making up answers on the spot.”

This preparation doesn’t have to take much time, but get to know the company a little, understand the full vacancy, not just the title, and know why you’re applying.

Answer the following questions before an interview to get started:

  • Why are you suitable for this position? What can you offer us?
  • How would acquaintances describe you, what are your strengths?

Candidates who can answer these questions fluently automatically have an edge.

5. Your first impression is important

That first impression isn’t just about your appearance, but also about your attitude and energy.

“We’re not extremely strict about this, but of course we always pay attention to it. A candidate doesn’t have to come in a suit, but should make sure to wear neat clothing.”

During the conversation, candidates stand out when they:

  • Come across interested and enthusiastic
  • Can communicate clearly and confidently
  • Show clear motivation

The candidates who stick in mind often share the same characteristics: a stable cv, strong language skills, and positive references.

6. Be authentic and honest

Perhaps the most important tip of all:

“Be yourself. There’s no point pretending to be someone else.
If you’re not authentic or honest, you’re making it very hard for yourself.”

Authenticity makes you credible and ensures a better match in the long run.
Recruiters aren’t looking for perfection, but for a real person behind the cv.

As Cindy herself puts it: “A cv is ultimately just a cv, it’s about the person behind the cv.”
